Honbo opened on Sun Street in Wan Chai in 2017, founded by Montreal-raised Hong Konger Michael Chan, and has since become one of the names that comes up first when locals argue about burgers. The flagship now sits on Moon Street, a small, bright room for eating in or taking away, with walk-ins only.
The menu is short. The signature Honbo is a thin-patty smash burger with American cheese and house sauce; the Honbo 1.5 adds a third patty, and the Honbo 2.0 (HK$168) stacks four crispy-edged patties with triple cheese, pickles and onion. Purists can order a plain hamburger or a thick-patty cheeseburger, The Gold Standard adds bacon, and there is an Impossible option. Buns are preservative-free potato milk rolls from a local baker, and chilli fries and sweet potato fries are the usual sides.
Good for a quick, inexpensive dinner in Wan Chai or around Soho. Bacon is on the menu, so it is not halal. A second branch is at 8 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central, with the same hours.
