Malthouse is a craft beer bar first. It sits on East Coast Road in Siglap with a long row of taps, a rotating list of local and imported beer and a regular neighbourhood crowd. It isn't a dedicated burger joint, and the menu also runs to pizzas and bar plates. The burgers are the reason it's on this list.
The line-up covers both camps. The regular burgers have thicker, juicier patties for a proper bite. The smash burgers have thin patties pressed hard on the griddle for crisp, lacy edges under melted cheese. The specials are what people come back for: the Baconnaise, and the Chopped Cheese, a take on the New York bodega favourite. Both have a good name among burger fans in the east of Singapore.
Go for an evening of beer and burgers rather than a quick lunch. Malthouse opens in the late afternoon on weekdays and is closed on Mondays. Happy hour on the taps makes an early start worthwhile, and the big games are shown on screen. Walk-ins are the norm, but larger groups should book ahead.
